I'm in the middle of moving all my custom GPTs right now. The ones I built for myself, and the ones I built for clients.

If you haven't heard yet, OpenAI is retiring custom GPTs. They're scheduled to stop working on December 11 and they're being replaced by plugins.

The good news is, moving them is pretty easy. It's literally a button and it takes a couple of minutes per GPT.

The part that requires a bit of work is sharing and here's why...

When you migrate a GPT, the new version starts private. So every person who used it, like your clients, your students, anyone who grabbed it as a free resource... will lose access in December.

So if you've built a GPT for other people, here's what I'd do this week:

  1. Make a list of every place the link is posted. Lead magnet emails, welcome sequences, course portals, sales pages. Seriously, write it down, coz you will forget one.

  2. Decide who needs access and how. Individual invites for clients. For anything public, making the plugin public goes through a separate submission process, so either go through that or find it a different home.

  3. Tell people before the switch. A short note with the new link and what's different.

But here's the bigger lesson for me...

A custom GPT was never my IP. My IP is the instructions, the structure, the way I think through a problem.

The GPT was just the container. Just like how a course is a container for a signature methodology or process.

That's why every set of instructions I write now and moving forward, will live in my own local folder first, in Obsidian. The GPT gets a copy. The Claude version gets a copy. The plugin gets a copy.

In full transparency, you don't need Obsidian. I just prefer using one. A folder on your computer works just fine. You can create one file per GPT, with the instructions, a list of the knowledge files, the actions it used, and your test prompts.

By the way, I did the whole migration live in my newest video, plus the checklist I run before I click that button. Watch it here.

This whole GPT going away is a good reminder that the tools will keep changing.

You probably don't need another AI tool. You need to get more value out of the tools you already have.

It's so easy to get caught chasing the next tool, feature, model or shiny new platform. But the bigger question is, what is AI actually changing inside your business? Is it saving you time? Helping you serve more clients? Opening up a new offer?

If you can't answer that yet, that's the thing to work on.

That's why I'm excited to be speaking at the AI Practitioners Summit on October 19 to 23. It's for people who are actually using AI. Building with it, testing it, implementing it, and sharing what's genuinely working.

Are you thinking of writing a book?

Maybe it’s the book you keep saying you’ll write someday… the experiences, lessons, and ideas you want to share beyond your social media post.

If that’s you, this free resource from my friend, Jamie Enfield, would be a great read. Jamie helps aspiring nonfiction and memoir writers move past overwhelm and start putting their stories into words.

So if “write a book” keeps landing at the bottom of your to-do list, this is a place to begin:

You don’t need every chapter figured out to take the first step.
